A flag flying from the top of a building makes a statement that a ground level pole cannot. It puts your flag on the skyline, visible across a site or a city, at the highest and most prominent point you have.
It is also the most demanding kind of flagpole installation there is, and not one to approach with a catalogue product and a set of wall brackets. Roof mounting is a specialist, engineered job. Done properly it is safe, discreet and lasts for decades. Done badly it is a serious risk suspended over everything below it.
Here is what a roof mounted flagpole actually involves, and how we approach it.
Every roof mounted pole is bespoke
There is no off-the-shelf roof mounted flagpole, and there is a good engineering reason why.
A ground mounted pole is supported along its buried length by the foundation around it. A roof mounted pole has none of that. It is supported at a single point, where it meets the building, and everything above that point is cantilevered into the wind. That single point of support has to carry the entire wind load of the pole and flag, which means it needs significant reinforcement and has to be engineered specifically for the structure it sits on.
Because no two roofs are the same, no two roof mounted poles are the same. The pole, its baseplate and its fixing are designed together for your building, not selected from a range.
How they are built
Our roof mounted poles are glassfibre, the same material we recommend across our range for its strength, its resistance to weather and the fact that it needs almost no maintenance. On a roof, where access for upkeep is difficult and expensive, a maintenance-free pole matters more than anywhere else.
The pole sits on a metal baseplate with an internal spigot, and the baseplate is fixed to the building. Ideally that means fixing directly to the structural steel beams of the building, so the load is carried by the frame itself rather than by the roof covering. Exactly how this is achieved is bespoke every time and depends on what the structure offers, which is why the engineering comes before the pole.
Heights
Roof mounted poles are typically between 5m and 8m, though we can go taller or shorter depending on the building and the effect you are after. Height at roof level reads very differently from height at ground level, and often a shorter pole than you would expect delivers the presence you want.
The internal safety wire, and why it matters
This is the single most important feature of a roof mounted pole, and it is worth understanding.
A flag high on a building takes a punishing amount of wind. In extreme conditions there is always a residual risk that a pole could fail at the top. On a ground mounted pole in an open field that is a manageable problem. On top of an occupied building, over a pavement or an entrance, a falling section of pole is not something you leave to chance.
Our roof mounted poles carry an internal safety wire. Metal wires run up the inside of the pole, anchored to the internal spigot at the base and fixed to the top of the pole. If the worst happens and the top of the pole is damaged in extreme winds, the broken section remains tethered to the base rather than falling. The wire is the reason the pole is safe to put above people.
It has a second benefit. Many roof poles are stayed with external stay wires, running from the pole down to fixing points across the roof. They work, but they look like the guy ropes on a marquee, and on a civic building, a hotel or any building where appearance matters, that is often unacceptable. Because our staying runs inside the pole, from the ground it simply reads as a single clean line. You get the safety without the clutter.
The engineering comes first
A roof mounted flagpole is only as good as its fixing to the building, so the structural side is not an afterthought, it is where the project starts.
The building has to be able to carry the loads the pole will impose, and the fixing has to transfer those loads into the structure safely. We have the capacity to carry out this structural work ourselves, or we are happy to work alongside a structural engineer you appoint. Either way, the calculations are done and the fixing is designed before anything is manufactured or installed.
This is the part that separates a proper roof installation from a dangerous one, and it is not a corner anyone should cut.
Getting it up there
Access to a roof is rarely straightforward, and it is another reason roof mounting is specialist work.
We handle lifting the pole into position as part of the installation, unless you already have a crane on site we can work with. Where a roof cannot be reached by conventional means, our access capability comes into its own. We hold IPAF powered access qualifications, steeplejack capability and rope access, which between them let us reach positions that many contractors would simply decline. For a single roof pole, being able to avoid erecting scaffold across a building is often the difference between a viable project and a prohibitively expensive one.
The planning and consent side is typically handled by the client, as it depends on the building and your relationship to it, but we are glad to advise on what a given installation is likely to require.
Keeping it maintained
A roof mounted pole is the hardest pole on any site to reach, which makes ongoing servicing something to plan for rather than react to.
We offer servicing for roof mounted poles, carried out by the same access-trained team that installs them. A pole that is inspected and maintained on a schedule stays safe and keeps its finish, and because we already know how to reach it, servicing is straightforward to arrange. Given the height and the exposure, and the consequences if a fitting fails over an occupied building, this is one installation where a maintenance plan genuinely earns its place.
