Flagpole Servicing
Keeping a flagpole in good working order takes more than an occasional visual check. Halyards fray, trucks develop wear and resistance and the mechanical components of any flagpole system will eventually need attention. Hampshire Flag Company has been servicing flagpoles since 1981 and our engineers have the experience to diagnose and resolve issues quickly, correctly and with minimal disruption to your site.
What sets us apart is not just our knowledge of flagpoles. It is our ability to reach them. Our team holds a range of specialist access qualifications that allow us to service flagpoles in locations that would defeat most contractors.
Specialist Access Capabilities
Not every flagpole can be reached from the ground, and not every site allows a vehicle-mounted platform. Over more than four decades we have developed a full suite of access methods to ensure we can service any flagpole in any location safely and cost-effectively.
IPAF Trained Operatives
Our operatives are trained and qualified through the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), meaning they are fully certified to operate a wide range of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) including cherry pickers and scissor lifts. For the majority of standard flagpole servicing, a MEWP is the quickest and most efficient access method and we are able to arrange MEWP hire as part of our service where required.
Steeplejack Capability
Where ground or site conditions make a MEWP impractical, our steeplejack-trained operatives can ladder directly up the flagpole to carry out servicing, repairs and full refurbishment work at height. This capability is particularly valuable for tall poles, poles on elevated structures and situations where vehicle access would cause damage to the surrounding area.
Rope Access
We also hold rope access capability, which opens up a further category of installation that is beyond the reach of standard access methods. This is particularly relevant for flagpoles on or adjacent to churches and historic buildings where the pole is set back from the road and neither a cherry picker nor a steeplejack approach is practical.
Many churches have flagpoles positioned close to the building but surrounded by churchyards. Driving a MEWP across a graveyard is simply not acceptable and in most cases not something a site would permit. Rope access allows our operatives to reach the pole and carry out a full service without any ground-level vehicle movement whatsoever.
Working at Height Risk Assessments
All of our working at height activity is underpinned by thorough risk assessment and method statement preparation. Before any access work takes place, our team assesses the site, identifies hazards and documents the safe system of work. This gives our clients confidence that the job is being carried out to the correct standard and provides the documentation required by health and safety legislation.
What a Service Visit Includes
Our flagpole service visits are thorough and methodical. A standard visit covers:
- Full visual and structural inspection of the pole, base and fittings
- Lowering of the pole (where possible) and a full clean from base to finial
- Full halyard examination, testing and replacement where required
- Finial, truck and cleat inspection, cleaning and servicing
- Flagpole locks/mechanism inspection for internal halyard systems
- Full operational test of the flagpole
Parts in Stock, Ready to Use
Because we operate from a 17,000 sq ft warehouse facility and hold extensive stock including flagpoles from 4m to 20m and above as well as a comprehensive range of parts and accessories from suppliers worldwide, our engineers arrive prepared. In almost all cases, components such as: halyards, finials, cleats, locks and other fittings can be swapped out on the same visit without a return trip.
Reactive Repairs and Emergency Call-Outs
When something goes wrong unexpectedly, we offer reactive repair and emergency call-out services. Whether a halyard has snapped, a finial has cracked or a fitting has failed, our team can diagnose and resolve the issue efficiently. Common repairs we carry out include halyard replacement, truck/finial renewal and cleat/fitting repairs.
Planned Flagpole Servicing Contracts
For organisations that depend on their flagpoles as a visible part of how they present to the world, a planned flagpole servicing contract provides complete peace of mind. We schedule service visits at agreed intervals throughout the year (typically, 6-monthly or annually), keep records of your flagpole’s condition over time and ensure any developing issues are caught and resolved before they become a problem.
Flagpole service contract clients receive priority response times and preferential rates on parts and labour, along with the assurance of working with a team that knows their installation. In addition, we include a full wax service in every third year of a contract. This will ensure that your flagpoles gloss paint remains in top condition for years to come.
Over 40 Years of Specialist Knowledge
Founded by Roy Carr in 1981 and now run by his daughter Angela, Hampshire Flag Company is a family business that has been servicing flagpoles longer than most of our competitors have been trading. That history means our engineers have encountered virtually every flagpole type and servicing challenge there is. We hold ISO 9001:2015 accreditation and operate to the same documented quality standards on every job, whether it is a routine annual service or an emergency repair at a high-profile site.
