This is a common wear point due to it being subject to the largest wind stress and is the most exposed section of the flag. This means it is more likely to get caught in trees, brush buildings, or whip against the pole itself. Over time, this can lead to the flag fraying or tearing.

Anti fray helps prevent this common wear point by acting as a sacrificial layer that bears the brunt of the wear and tear. Instead of the flag itself getting snagged, whipped and scraped, it is the netting. The anti-fray netting is designed to wear before the flag itself, acting as a clear visual indicator that your flag is ready for inspection, cleaning or repair.

What is Anti-fray Netting

Anti fray netting is a length of woven net fixed to the flying edge of a flag. This is designed as a sacrificial layer that absorbs the wear and tear typically experienced by a flag. Any frayed edges on your anti-fray are perfectly normal and a sign it is doing its job correctly.

How does it work

Typically flags fray due to high winds, rain, fouling trees, buildings or the flagpole and unnecessary stress from an incorrectly sized flag. The primary mechanism for a frayed flag comes from the flying edge moving in the wind, which caused friction and wear in the flag

How We Manufacture Our Sewn Flags.

Material

At The Hampshire Flag Company, our Sewn Flags are made in house from pre-coloured 155gsm Woven Polyester fabric that is then sewn together to create the flag. In some cases, for more intricate designs, a printed Knitted Polyester badge will be sewn to the woven polyester material.

In every case our flags are manufactured to MOD / Royal Navy standards.

Woven Polyester offers superior strength whilst remaining relatively lightweight. The strength and flexibility make it more weather resistant than cheaper, lower quality printed flags, allowing the flag to perform better in wind and rain. Woven Polyester is UV resistant, providing high colour retention, ensuring colours remain brighter for longer. When Paired with our Anti-Fray netting, you can have peace of mind whilst regularly flying your sewn flag.

Manufacturing Process.

The Hampshire Flag Company is the foremost flagmaker in the UK with over 45 years of experience.

The Design process begins by plotting out the design. Fabric is then measured up against the plot and any printed badges or emblems are put onto place.

HFC’s team of skilled craftsmen then begin to sew the panels into place, individually attaching each colour block into place. Any badges or emblems are then sewn around the edge and incorporated into the flag.

Excess material from colour overlaps and around the edge of the badges are then trimmed away by hand to ensure all lines are straight and the panels are evenly proportioned.

Finaly, the flag is finished to specification with the addition of the Rope and Toggle, Eyelets, Inglefield clips or pole sleeve. Anti-fray netting will be added and the flag will then be complete.

After a final Quality inspection, our flags are packaged and ready to be received by our customers.

What is a printed flag?

Printed Flags are a good choice if you value lightweight flags, with vibrant colours and intricate designs. Hampshire flags printed flags are no less durable than their sewn counterpart if flown correctly and cared for well. They deliver bold colours, sharp detail and excellent value, making it ideal for events, celebrations and situations where a premium sewn flag isn’t necessary.

Our Printed Flags are made from 115gsm knitted Polyester or Recycled Knitted Polyester fabric. Renowned for its vibrant colours, intricate design and high-resolution print. With a 95% bleed through rate, our single sided printed flags can be viewed from both sides with a near perfect mirror image on the reverse. If your design incorporates words or logos that cannot be read correctly in reverse, don’t worry! We also offer double-sided flags where two printed panels are sewn together with a blackout interliner between them. This prevents ghosting, where the shadow of the design on the reverse can be seen from the front.

Printed Flags allow for photo realistic designs to a level of detail that a sewn flag could not achieve. If your design features high levels of detail, photos, or gradients, a printed flag is right for you.

How We Manufacture Our Printed Flags.

Manufacturing Process.

The Design process begins in our artwork studio where the standard design is scaled to the specific flag or custom artwork is set up, reviewed, proofed and where needed amended or redesigned. HFC’s in-house artwork studio houses skilled graphic designers who offer an artworking service where we can help you create any design you have in mind. We will create the print files and resupply them back to you for future use in prints or online in any way you like.

The design is then sent to print, where Hampshire flags in house printers are loaded with knitted polyester. The design is printed onto the flag and then cut on our cutting machine. If the design is double sided, it then goes to the sewing room, where our skilled craftsmen install a blackout interliner between the two printed panels and sew the flag together. All flags are hand finished with a reinforced hem and the finishing of your choice.

Finally, the flag undergoes a quality inspection before being packaged and ready to be received by our customer.

To prolong the life of your flag and ensure it is always looking its best, we recommend that the flag is lowered and taken indoors during winds exceeding 35mph and during heavy rain. High winds can cause the flag to wear prematurely and can put a lot of stress on the finishings and the flagpole itself. A wet flag is a heavy flag, so if your flag has gotten wet, ensure it is fully dry before flying again. This keeps the flag light and allows if to fly easily. Flags should be inspected regularly for signs of wear and can be washed should they get dirty. HFC offers a wash and repair service, where any damage to your flag can be fixed and the flag gets cleaned. During this process we can also reinstall worn finishings and anti-fray. Anti-fray acts as a sacrificial layer, so if you notice it looks tired and frayed, that is a good indication that the flag is ready for a wash and repair service, where we will reinstall a new layer of anti-fray.

New Banner Masts for Bonus Pastor Catholic College

We recently completed the installation of six banner masts at Bonus Pastor Catholic College, a project that demonstrates how thoughtful planning and quality materials can transform a space. We delivered within a tight timeframe and tailored to the specific needs of a busy school environment; the installation has created a vibrant, high-impact entrance that reflects the college’s identity and ethos.

The Challenge

Bonus Pastor Catholic College wanted to enhance the school’s entrance and create a stronger sense of identity through a new visual feature. As this was the first time the college had installed flagpoles or banner masts, the aim was to introduce something that would bring colour and recognition to the school’s house system. The brief called for the installation of six ground-mounted banner masts across the site; each fitted with two pairs of Eurochieftain banner arms, widely regarded for their durability and ability to display banners effectively in all weather conditions.

While the site itself presented no issues with height restrictions or access, thanks to the availability of surrounding playground areas, space was limited, making positioning a key consideration. There was also the added complexity of working within a live school environment, meaning the entire installation needed to be carefully planned and delivered within a strict timeframe. The Easter break provided the only viable window for completing the works without disrupting day-to-day school activities.

Our Approach

To overcome the space limitations, a collaborative approach was taken from the outset. During the quotation stage and subsequent site survey, a range of installation options were presented, along with expert recommendations on the most effective locations. Backup positions were also identified and agreed in advance to ensure flexibility if challenges arose during the installation phase. When the original preferred location proved unsuitable, the alternative solution was implemented seamlessly, with clear communication maintained throughout.

Durability and long-term performance were central to the specification. The use of Eurochieftain banner arms ensured the banners would remain taut, visible and visually appealing in all conditions, making them particularly suited to a busy school environment where low maintenance is essential. Careful planning and coordination also enabled our installation team to complete all six masts and fit the banner arms within the two-week time period, ensuring the project was delivered on time and ready for the return of staff and students.

A 12 Metre Flagpole for Quintin Boat Club, Ready in Two Weeks

When Quintin Boat Club in Chiswick approached Hampshire Flag Company to supply and install a flagpole for their newly refurbished clubhouse, they needed a supplier who could move quickly, deliver on time and install to the standard that a prestigious riverside venue deserves. The 12 metre fibreglass flagpole was in the ground and flying within two weeks of the order being placed.

The Client

Quintin Boat Club is one of London’s leading rowing clubs, based on the north bank of the Thames at Chiswick. The club sits right at the finish line of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, one of the most iconic stretches of the Thames and a location steeped in rowing history. Following a full refurbishment of the clubhouse, the club wanted a flagpole that would complement the newly improved facilities and make a statement from the riverbank.

The riverside location on the Thames presented some site-specific considerations: ground conditions near the riverbank required careful assessment and the installation needed to be carried out precisely to ensure the pole would perform reliably in the exposed conditions of a Thames riverside setting.

Timing was also a priority. With the refurbishment programme ongoing and the club keen to have the flagpole in place as part of the finished result, a fast turnaround from order to installation was essential.

The 12 metre fibreglass pole was installed ground-mounted to the correct specification for the riverside location, with the foundation depth and concrete mix suited to the site conditions. The full installation including pole, halyard system and fittings was completed to a high standard befitting the club’s profile and location.

The Outcome

From order to installation, the entire project was completed in under two weeks. The flagpole now stands at the finish line of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, flying above one of the most celebrated stretches of the Thames. A New Flagpole for St Edward’s Church Without Disturbing the Churchyard

Installing a new flagpole on a church building sounds like a routine job. At St Edward’s Church in Moreton-in-Marsh, the combination of the building’s height and the surrounding churchyard made it anything but. Hampshire Flag Company installed the new wall-mounted flagpole in December 2025 using rope access techniques, completing the job without a single vehicle entering the grounds.

The Challenge

Churches present a recurring access challenge that is not found elsewhere. The desired flagpole position was high on the church tower, well beyond safe reach from the ground. The obvious solution for any access contractor would be a cherry picker. The equally obvious problem was the churchyard.

Driving a cherry picker through a churchyard is simply not something a church would permit, and rightly so. A scaffold structure large enough to reach the desired flagpole position would have been expensive, time-consuming to erect and highly disruptive to the church and its visitors. The job needed a different approach.

Our Approach

Hampshire Flag Company used rope access techniques to reach the desired flagpole position and carry out the installation. Our operatives worked from height to fix the bracket securely to the church tower and complete the full installation, including the pole, halyard system and fittings, without any ground-level vehicle movement and without disturbing the churchyard in any way.

Rope access is particularly well suited to church buildings and heritage sites precisely because it requires no ground-level infrastructure. There are no vehicles, no scaffold tubes, no base plates and no disruption to the surrounding environment. The operatives reach the work face and carry out the job, and when they are done the site looks exactly as it did before they arrived.

The Outcome

St Edward’s Church now has a new wall-mounted flagpole flying proudly from the tower, installed in December 2025. The churchyard was undisturbed throughout the process and the installation was completed cleanly and efficiently.
